July 2013
Dear 4-Hers & families,
Can you believe it is about time for another fair? We, as leaders, have enjoyed working with each one of you. We hope you have learned a lot this year and have enjoyed working with your calf. Our last meeting for this year will be on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:00 PM in the dairy feeder calf barn at the fairgrounds. This is a work night to get the barns ready for the fair. You may want to bring your shovels or rakes. The base of sawdust will already be in the stalls. The stall dividers will be up also, except for the east section of the big Dairy Barn. That section will be used for open shows by the dairy and beef exhibitors on the first Friday and Saturday of the fair. Those dividers will be put up by Sunday.
We are very crowded for space in the barn so if you or another member you know is not bringing their calf for any reason, and have not notified us yet, please give Emily Sommers (536-9988) or Kathy Eash (361-4588) a call immediately so we can make the necessary adjustment in the stalling arrangements
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING AND EVERYONE MUST ATTEND. The following are some important reminders:
1. We will have a table set up for everyone to pick up your fair packet on work night. This packet will contain: fair badges, parent passes, parking hangers, exhibitor numbers (to be worn during show) and completion sheets. It is your responsibility to see your packet gets picked up! If you are a new member, make sure you pick up your club t-shirt at this meeting.
2. You will need to turn in your record/growth summary sheets in order to get your fair passes and rearview mirror parking hanger. Use your weigh tape, if you have one, to get your calf's final weight and use $.90 per pound to figure the final price. Record sheets are available on the website.
3. Each member is required to turn in a signed and notarized affidavit listing any medication that your calf has had in the 30 days prior to fair. This needs to be signed by both the 4-Her and one parent. This does not mean you cannot give your calf medicine if it needs it. The affidavit is a way to let the buyers know if your calf did receive any medicines in those 30 days. We are sending the affidavits to you with this mailing so if both you and your parent cannot be at the work night you can get this affidavit notarized before work night. If you want to do the affidavit at work night, we will have a notary available to do the notarizing at no charge. The affidavits need to be signed in the presence of the notary. The forms WILL NOT be available at work night. Bring your affidavit with you.
4. Every member needs to turn in a signed Care Contract Form and the Liability Disclaimer. You need to print these items off the website. There will be none available at the work night.
5. CONCESSION STAND: A big thank you to all that signed up. Make sure to double check when you work!! If you haven’t signed up, check to see if there are any spots left.
6. Your completion sheets must be filled out and turned in to a leader by Thursday, July 25. It is your responsibility to turn in your completion sheet. We need to have this by the end of the fair because our achievement banquet will be held on Tuesday, August 13 at the ECCC Building. This completion sheet is the only way the Extension Office knows you have completed the project.
7. Decorating the head board by your stall card is optional. These decorations can be put up on work night unless you are stalled in the east section of the big Dairy Barn, then Sunday would be better for decorating.
8. We are now accepting names for anyone wishing to be considered for the adult advisory board. Let any advisory board member or leader know by work night if you are interested.
9. During the fair, stalls and dividers must be kept clean at all times. Stalls and dividers will be checked daily by leaders or advisory board members. There is not a set time for stall check, you’ll just have to keep it clean all the time. It is important to keep these clean because there are hundreds of people walking through the barn every day. You will be asked to clean up your stall area if the leaders or board members see that it needs to be cleaned. Ten Herdsmanship Awards are given away at the Achievement Banquet in August, and much of it is based on your stall area at the fair.
10. Please try to share wheel barrows, shovels and forks with other families so the aisles don't get so crowded during the fair. Please be sure that all personal items can be folded & stored away conveniently and can be easily moved in case of emergency.
11. You are not required to get health papers for your calves. However, the Dairy Feeder Calf Advisory Board will be screening calves as they come into the barns. So, it is still important that your calves are healthy. There should be no signs of ringworm. Calves should be completely healed from being castrated and dehorned.
12. Calves can start arriving at the fairgrounds on Friday, July 19. They must all be stalled by Monday morning by weigh in. This way we will be able to divide calves into classes for the show. Our show will be held on Tuesday, July 23 at 3:00 PM.
13. The basketball court is for both Dairy and Dairy Feeder Calf club members--big and small, young and old.
14. We will be cleaning out the DFC barn and part of the Dairy barn on Sunday, July 28. We need all the help we can get. There will be more information to follow.
15. Banquet is on August 13 at 6:30pm. This is a carry in dinner. Last names starting with A-H, please bring a hot or side dish. I-P bring a salad. Q-Z bring a dessert. Look for sign up sheets during the fair at the office.
16. Before you leave the work night be sure you have:
A) signed and turned in your notarized livestock affidavit
B) turned in your record sheet
C) signed and turned in a Liability Disclaimer and a Care Contract
D) picked up your packet from leaders - every family gets one
E) picked up your T-shirt (for all new members)
Again if you have questions, give one of your leaders a phone call. Mike, 596-1040; Brian and Jean, 294.6036; Trent, 642.2663; Ken, 533-0726; or Erica, 361.9051. See you on the 16th, and have fun at the fair.

June 2013
Dear DFC club members,
Summer time is finally here!!! This gives you more time to work with your calves and to help Mom and Dad around the house and farm. The next meeting for the Dairy Feeder Calf Club will be on Thursday, June 20, 2013. This is going to be a work night where we will be doing some painting in our barn and working on the landscaping around the barn. We need LOTS of help so please bring paint brushes, rollers, and gardening tools. There will be refreshments available!! We will begin at 7:00 pm with registration beginning at 6:45pm.
If you are having problems with a calf or have lost a calf, please let Mike know ASAP (596-1040). Some families weighed extra calves and would be willing to help you out.
ESSAYS!! are due on the 20th!! Everyone needs to turn in an essay!! Essay topic and length requirements are posted on the website. Also due is all stall requests.
CONCESSION STAND!! We will have sign up sheets out again at our June meeting and would like to see EVERYONE sign up for at least one shift. It is important that we get all the shifts filled up. Sign up will be on a first come, first serve basis. If you have a certain day that works better than others, make sure you get signed up. And if you are able and willing to work more than one shift, please do. You never know who you will get to know better and what friendships may be formed!
Graduating seniors….There is a dairy feeder calf club scholarship that is available for you. We will be giving out two scholarships and forms can be found on our website. The application is due July 1st to Mike Lee.
Important: Regarding the auction program, we have learned that some families with more than 2 parents can have strong feelings concerning which parents are listed in the program and in what order. Parents will be listed in the following format: (Mike & Becky Lee). If you wish it to be listed any other way, (for example: Mike Lee & Becky Lee or vice versa) please let Erica know at this meeting.
If your calf is not dehorned and/or castrated yet, you need to get it done soon! Now that fly season is in full swing, watch your calves closely for signs of maggots and infection.
Hope you are working with your calf everyday.
See you on the 20th.

May 2013
Hello 4-H members and families,
Can you believe that the fair is only about 2 months away and there is less than a month of school left for most of you. The next meeting of the Dairy Feeder Calf Club will be held on Thursday, May 16 at 7:00 PM in the Dairy Feeder Calf barn. Registration will begin at 6:45. Our program will be what we have, in the past, had in June. We will have calves there and you are welcome to bring your own. The older experienced members will help the new members with proper showing, handling, and tying of their calf. We will also have a fair expectations and tack box talk along with the usual clipping demonstration. This will be beneficial to new members and we would love for our experienced 4-Hers to get involved helping.
We had a very successful weigh-in day on Saturday, May 4. A big THANK YOU to all the organizers and workers that made it a smooth weigh-in! Everyone did a great job! Also thank you to all the parents and friends that hauled calves to the fairgrounds. We realize everyone is busy with other activities and appreciate all the cooperation. We weighed 305 calves for our club members. Thank you to Milford Animal Clinic who was on hand to give vaccinations, dehorn, and castrate calves.
Now is a good time to be getting your calves castrated and dehorned if it is not already done. Get it done now while there are fewer flies to worry about. They need to be completely healed by fair time.
Don’t forget to be working on your essay. Essay details can be found on the website. Essays are due at the June meeting. Also, we messed up and told everyone that stalling request were due in April. We were wrong and we apologize for the mistake. They are due at the June meeting. So if your family would like to be stalled next to another family, you still have time to get those turned in.
We hope you are taking advantage of the longer evenings and are walking your calves often. The walking helps build their muscles.
See you on the 16th,
Mike, Brian, Trent, Ken, Jean, Erica, & Brad
Looking Ahead:
§ June 20th: Worknight at barn and Café-A All essays are DUE!
§ July 16th: Work Night & receive your fair passes
§ July 19-27th: Elkhart County 4-H Fair
§ August 13th: Achievement Banquet
April 2013
Dear Dairy Feeder Calf Club members,
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the ECCC building, with registration beginning at 6:45. Our speaker for the night is a local butcher, Bob Yoder. Come learn about the different cuts of meat and where each cut comes from. He will also talk about where to give and NOT to give shots and discuss the damage that this could cause to the final product. Don’t forget you need to have your dues paid before you can draw your auction number at the May weigh in. Dues this month are $12.00. Please come prepared to take care of this if you haven’t done so already!
Online enrollment was due on April 15!! Any enrollments received now will be assessed a late fee in addition to the state fee. Enrollment will not be accepted after June 1st. Check out the website for more information on how to get signed up!! www.dairyfeedercalfclub.com
***Stalling requests are due at this meeting!! If you would like to stall next to anther family be sure to fill out a stall request form and get it turned in at this meeting. If you did not sell a flat of geraniums per 4-Her and you turn in a stall request, you will need to pay a $10 stalling fee per 4-Her. This needs to be taken care of. Last chance, so don’t forget.
Now is a good time to get your calf if you don’t already have him. If you are having trouble locating a calf you can give Mike (596-1040) a call. He will help the best that he can.
We would like to give a big THANK YOU to all the members that sold geraniums this year. If you sold geraniums, don’t forget they will arrive at the fairgrounds on Wednesday, April 24. All geraniums must be picked up next to the big commercial building on Wednesday, April 24 from 3 PM - 6 PM.
IMPORTANT! Our calf weigh-in date is Saturday May 4, 7:30 AM to 11 AM at the fairgrounds. We will be holding our weigh-in at the Dairy Feeder Calf Barn. There are many activities going on at the fairgrounds that day and the extension office has asked that we stay away from the west side of the fairgrounds. We will be bringing trucks and/or trailers in through Gate 4 or 5, along the back side of the track, past the Harness Horse Barn, past the backside of the Grandstands to our barn. Please leave the same way. DO NOT use Gates 2 & 3! All DFC club members are required to bring their calves on this date to be weighed and ear tagged. If you do not have transportation for your calf to the fairgrounds, ask another club member or a neighbor to help you. It is your responsibility to have your calves there. There is no minimum or maximum weight for calves at weigh-in. Each member can only tag two calves for the county fair. Digital pictures, which have worked very well for us in the past, will be taken again this year. Also, we will be drawing auction numbers at the weigh in. Don’t forget to draw yours!
If you are planning on showing at the State Fair, six calves may be tagged total. Be sure to tell the workers at weigh-in if you are planning to take a calf to State Fair so the proper paperwork can be filled out. You may show the same calf at the county & state fairs. If you do this, you are not allowed to sell that calf at the county fair. Please feel free to ask questions and we will do our best to answer them.
There will be a vet available at weigh-in to give your calves their vaccination shot, dehorning, and castration. The cost of these services are as follows: Dehorn $10, Castrate $10, Vaccinate $5, Deworm $2.50, Implanting $2.50. Dehorning, castration, vaccinations, and moving calves to & from weigh-in each puts stress on calves, so we would suggest not doing all of these at weigh-in, especially if your calf has been sick. Calves need to be castrated and dehorned early enough for them to be completely healed by fair week.
Don’t forget to be working on your essay question. Essays are due at the June meeting!! You can get more information about the essay on the website at www.dairyfeedercalfclub.com.
If you are a first year member, make sure you pick up your calf’s rope halter at this meeting!
The 10 year members in our club this year that we know about are, Nick Adam, Nathan Bailey, Shannon Baker, Cole Beasy, Tyler Beasy, Melissa Berger, Morgan Brew, Eldon Burtsfield, Jadon Chupp, Spencer Culp, Zachary Eash, Brynne Flickinger, Lindsey Herwick, Jamin Hochstetler, Lindsay Hostetler, Robert Huddleston, Dillon Lockwood, Tina Mast, Erika Meranda, Jed Miller, Sean Nunemaker, Samantha Paul, Brian Pluimer, Jorgen Reimer, Kelsie Robison, Rachel Schrock, Derek Sexton, Hanna Stump, Shawn Stump, Raina Troyer, Riley Troyer and Elizabeth Yontz. If we have missed anyone, please let us know.
We hope to see you on the 18th.

March 2013
Dear Dairy Feeder Calf Club members and families,
Hello! Our next meeting will be on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the ECCC Building at the fairgrounds, with registration beginning at 6:45 pm. We will meet in the Showalter Room. Have you ever wondered what you could do with an Ag degree? Agriculture is not all about livestock and farming! Come and hear about all the different careers that are out there. We also need to vote for our queen representative and will do so at this meeting. LADIES…if you are interested please come to the meeting. Or if you can’t attend, call Mike (596-1040) and let him know you would like to be put on the ballot.
Online enrollment is due April 15. If you have not registered yet, be sure to take care of it as soon as possible. So once again, here are the instructions on where and how to get registered! To access the website go to www.elkhartcounty4h.org. Click on the left tab ENROLL IN 4-H. You will be directed to a page that is entitled, Enroll in Elkhart County 4-H. Read the directions on this page and then scroll down and click on the “ENROLL IN 4-H” button. A $15 non-refundable State Program Fee per child is due at the time of enrollment with a maximum of $45 per family for 3 or more children. There is no fee for Exploring 4-H youth. Enrollment and payment of fees are due by April 15, 2013. Please call the Purdue Extension Office (574-533-0554) if you have any questions. ***NOTE: The $15 non-refundable State Program Fee per child does not take the place of regular club dues that the DFC Club collects.
For those of you who have yet to pay the club dues, it has gone up $1.00 this month. The $11.00 dues from each member to help cover club expenses and auction costs can be paid at this meeting. So please come prepared to take care of this. You will not be able to draw an auction number at the May Weigh-In until your dues are paid! If you wish to pay by check, make it payable to: Dairy Feeder Calf Club.
Now is a good time to get your calves if you don’t already have them. If you are having trouble locating calves, you can call Mike (596-1040). He will be glad to help you if he can.
Essay question has been decided. This years topic is: Why did you chose dairy feeder calf as a project? How does your project affect the area food supply? Go to www.dairyfeedercalfclub.com to check out the specific length requirements!! Essays are not due till the June meeting, however, it is never too early to start them.
Geranium order forms are posted on the DFC website. EVERY 4-Her listed on a stall request form must sell one flat (18 flowers) or donate $10.00 to the club. This year pink, red and White geranium plants can be ordered. The plants cost $1.25 each. Our club gets $.25 for every plant sold. Collect the money when orders are taken. Checks should be made payable to the Dairy Feeder Calf Club. Orders and money need to be turned in to Kathy Eash by APRIL 5. We need to write one big check when we turn our order into the extension office. So please have your money and orders turned in on time! Saves us a lot of headaches! Geranium pickup is on Wednesday April 24 at the fairgrounds.
Our calf weigh in date is Saturday, May 4, 7:30 to 11:00 am at the fairgrounds in the Feeder Calf barn. Every calf must be brought in to be pictured, weighed, and ear tagged. We will also be signing up calves for those choosing to go to the State Fair at this time. If needed, Milford Animal Clinic will be on hand to dehorn, castrate, vaccinate, deworm and implant. The cost of these services are as follows: Dehorn $10, Castrate $10, Vaccinate $5, Deworm $2.50, Implanting $2.50. Also, we will be drawing auction numbers at the weigh in. Don’t forget to draw yours!
We are needing to spread the work load out over a larger group of people. We would like our leaders to focus on the 4-Hers in the context of the 4-H program. Your advisory board has identified six areas that we would like your help with to free up our leaders. Listed are the six areas and a brief description.
