All enrollment cards must be signed by a parent or guardian in two places. ALSO!! The extension office has stated, youth who enroll after July 1st will not receive parent passes for the fair!!
Again this year, we are going to be collecting money just once. Dues are $10.00/member which consists of $6.00 to help cover club expenses and $4.00 that covers the auction fees. The deadline to pay these dues is the February meeting, after the deadline we will tack on $1.00 per month that it is late. You will not be able to draw your auction number at the April meeting until you pay your dues. So please come prepared and take care of this ASAP.
We will be making some changes on our club manual this year. We will no longer be printing manuals for every family. We will only be providing manuals for those families that do not have access to the internet. The Purdue Extension Office is no longer going to be printing items for free, and we feel this is the best way to keep our cost down. We will also be using the website to post important information throughout the year, such as newsletters, the essay question, and contact information. It will also serve as a good tool to look up club information. Please take note of the email address, so when you receive mail from it, you won’t junk it! We are going to have a Veterinarian speaking at the meeting. Please come with open ears and questions! Remember, there are no dumb questions. Now is a good time to ask! Also just a reminder, we would like to have you turn in your paper saying how you will support our concession stand project. This paper was sent out in your January newsletter.
Membership Cards….If you haven’t turned them in yet this is a good time to do so!! Remember, it is your responsibility to get them to the Extension Office by April 1. A membership card needs to be filled out for each club a 4-Her is in, listing all clubs on each card. The $10.00 from each member to help cover club expenses and auction costs can be paid at this meeting also. It goes up $1.00 at the March meeting. So please come prepared to take care of this. If you wish to pay by check, make it payable to: Dairy Feeder Calf Club.
If you have not yet, please take time to explore our website. We will be using the website to post important information throughout the year, such as newsletters, the essay question, meeting dates and contact information. It will also serve as a good tool to look up club information. We will only be providing manuals for those families that do not have access to the internet. The Purdue Extension Office is no longer going to be printing items for free, and we feel this is the best way to keep our cost down. Also, if you have not given us your updated email address, please do so!!
The website address: www.dairyfeedercalfclub.com
This year’s essay question is: Name two things that you like about the Dairy Feeder Calf Club and one thing that you would like to change. Explain your reasons.
Geranium Sales: Order forms are available on the website. Geraniums will be selling for $1.25 again this year and will be available in three colors, red, white or pink. Orders and money will be due to Kathy Eash by Friday, April 1, with pickup on Tuesday, April 26 at the fairgrounds. Don’t forget about the contest! The top three sellers will be rewarded. You are competing for the following: 1st choice of stalling, 2nd choice of stalling or choice of sale order. So get out there and sell, sell, sell! This is the only money maker we do for the club, so it is very important that we sell lots of geraniums.

April 1 - Membership cards due at the Extension Office
March 17 - March meeting in ECCC building
April 1 – Geranium orders & money due to leaders

April Newsletter-2011
Dear Dairy Feeder Calf Club
members, April
2011
Wow, where did this pasts month go?! Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Home & Family Arts Building, with registration beginning at 6:45. We will have a speaker at the meeting to talk about her 10 years in 4-H and how it has lead to her career choice. Don’t forget you need to have your dues paid before you can draw your auction number at the May weigh in. Dues this month are $12.00. Please come prepared to take care of this if you haven’t done so already!
Membership cards were due in the Extension Office April 1. If you have not turned yours in, be sure to get it turned in as soon as possible. Remember you need to fill one out for each club you are in.
Stalling requests are due at the meeting!! If you would like to stall next to anther family be sure to fill out a stall request form and get it turn in at this meeting. Last chance, so don’t forget. Any questions call Becky (202-1170).
Now is a good time to get your calf if you don’t already have him. If you are having trouble locating a calf you can give Mike (596-1040) a call. He will help the best that he can. Local Calf Auction:Date: April 16, 2011. Location: Dairy Feeder Calf Barn @ the fairgrounds Time: 11:00 a.m. sale, 10:00 a.m. preview. All calves will be weaned, dehorned, castrated, and will have received their first round of vaccinations.
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the members that sold geraniums this year. If you sold geraniums, don’t forget they will arrive at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, April 26. If there are any parents that would like to help unload plants, give Erica a call (361-9051). Those parents would be free to take their plants when the unloading is completed. All other geraniums must be picked up next to the big commercial building on Tuesday, April 26 from 3 PM - 6 PM.
IMPORTANT! Our calf weigh-in date is Saturday May 7, 7:30 AM to 11 AM at the fairgrounds. We will be holding our weigh-in at the Dairy Feeder Calf Barn. There are many activities going on at the fairgrounds that day so we will be bringing trucks and/or trailers in through Gate 5, along the back side of the track, past the Harness Horse Barn, past the backside of the Grandstands to our barn. Please leave the same way. DO NOT use Gates 2 & 3! All DFC club members are required to bring their calves on this date to be weighed and ear tagged. If you do not have transportation for your calf to the fairgrounds, ask another club member or a neighbor to help you. It is your responsibility to have your calves there. There is no minimum or maximum weight for calves at weigh-in. Each member can tag only two calves but may weigh more than two for the county fair. We will be taking digital pictures. This has worked very well for us in the past.
If you are planning on showing at the State Fair, six calves may be tagged. Be sure to tell the workers at weigh-in if you are planning to take a calf to State Fair so the proper paperwork can be filled out. You may show the same calf at the county & state fairs. If you do this, you are not allowed to sell that calf at the county fair. Please feel free to ask questions, we will do our best to answer them.
Milford Animal Clinic will be available at weigh-in to give your calves their vaccination shot, dehorning, and castration. Dehorning, castration, vaccinations, and moving calves to & from weigh-in each puts stress on calves, so we would suggest not doing all of these at weigh-in, especially if your calf has been sick. Calves need to be castrated and dehorned early enough for them to be completely healed by fair week.
Don’t forget to be working on your essay question. This year’s question is: Name two things that you like about the Dairy Feeder Calf Club and one thing you would like to see changed. Explain your reasons. You can get more information about the essay on the website at www.dairyfeedercalfclub.com.
If you are a first year member, you can pick up your calf’s rope halter at this meeting. These halters are donated by the Elk. Co. 4-H Dairy Feeder Calf Adv. Board. It would be great if each member receiving a halter would drop a thank you to Elkhart County Dairy Feeder Calf Advisory Board, % Lydell Troyer, 67119 County Road 31, Goshen, IN 46528.
Congratulations to Trista Grove who will be representing the Dairy Feeder Calf Club in the queen contest this year at the fair!
The 10 year members in our club this year that we know about are: Nathaniel Adam, Kari Beasley, Jessica Blessing, Morgan Bobeck, Connor Bontrager, Neal Brown, Jessica Chupp, Allison Culp, Jenna Dreier, Summer Ely, Brenna Ghigliotto, Allison Hostetler, Nate Kropf, Jessica Lewis, Emily Meranda, Cody Miller, Taylor Olson, Michael Paul, Courtney Reimer, Josh Sommers, Maddie Spitaels, Charlotte Stilwell, Aaron Troyer, Kelsey Wagner, Jonathan Warstler, Rachel Weeber, Adam Wenger, Brandon Wert, and Jali Yoder. We had a very successful weigh-in day on Saturday, May 7. A big THANK YOU to all the organizers and workers that made it a smooth weigh-in! Everyone did a great job! Also thank you to all the parents and friends that hauled calves to the fairgrounds. We realize everyone is busy with other activities and appreciate all the cooperation. We weighed 314 calves for our club members. Thank you to Milford Animal Clinic who was on hand to give vaccinations, dehorn, and castrate calves.

June Newsletter -2011
Dear DFC club members, June 2011
Summer time is finally here! This gives you more time to work with your calves and to help Mom and Dad around the house and farm. The next meeting for the Dairy Feeder Calf Club will be on Thursday, June 16, 2011. We will be meeting in our barn or the show arena. We will begin at 7:00 pm with registration beginning at 6:30 pm. We are going to have a split meeting. First year members, or anyone that wants to, can stay in the barn where we’ll have clipping and showmanship demonstrations. Everyone else will work on our new concession stand! The fair will be here before we know it and we will need all the help we can get to make sure our stand is finished in time!
If you are having problems with a calf or have lost a calf, please let Mike know ASAP (596-1040). Some families weighed extra calves and would be willing to help you out.
ESSAYS!! are due on the 16th!! Everyone needs to turn in an essay!! The essay topic is: Name two things that you like about the Dairy Feeder Calf Club and one thing you would like to see changed. Explain your reasons. Length requirements are posted on the website or you can contact Becky (260-350-8471) for details.
CONCESSION STAND!! Our advisory board members have been very busy planning for our concession stand this year. Construction is going good and we even had a work day earlier this month. We will have sign up sheets out at our June meeting and would like to see EVERYONE sign up for at least one shift. Each shift will need to have three adults and ten 4-Hers. There will be four three hour shift blocks. Shift times are from 10am-1pm, 1pm-4pm, 4pm-7pm, and 7pm-closing. It is important that we get these all filled up so we do not have to hire any groups to work for us. We, however, will plan to hire groups to work on Tuesday (show day) and Friday (auction day). Everyone that works a shift will receive one free drink and one free meal. What can be better than that! Free food! Sign up will be a first come first serve basis. If you have a certain day that works better than others, make sure you come to the meeting to get signed up. And if you are able and willing to work more than one shift, please do. You never know who you’ll get to know better and what friendships could be formed!
Graduating seniors….There is a dairy feeder calf club scholarship that is available for you. We will be giving out two scholarships. Forms can be picked up at this meeting. The application is due July 1st .
Important: Regarding the auction program, they have learned that some families with more than 2 parents can have strong feelings concerning which parents are listed in the program and in what order. Parents will be listed in the following format: (Mike & Becky Lee). If you wish it to be listed any other way, (for example: Mike Lee & Becky Lee or vice versa) please let Erica know at this meeting.
If your calf is not dehorned and/or castrated yet, you need to get it done soon! Now that fly season is in full swing, watch your calves closely for signs of maggots and infection.
Trista Grove will be our fair queen contestant this year. Good luck and have fun!
Come and learn all you can about clipping and showing.
Hope you are working with your calf everyday.
See you on the 16th.
Mike, Brian, Jean, Trent, Ken, Erica, Becky, Alex and Brad
